The Perkins Local School District Board of Education officially welcomed its newest member on Wednesday night, when the members appointed Perkins Township resident Eric Lapata to fill a vacant seat.

Mr. Lapata, who attended Perkins Schools as a youth, is a 2004 graduate of Perkins High School and is co-lead pastor at The Chapel in Perkins Township.

“It’s a huge humbling honor to come back and serve the schools that made such a difference in my life,” Mr. Lapata said.

He also is a graduate of Cedarville University near Xenia, Ohio, and holds a master's degree from Grand Rapids Theological University in Michigan. Mr. Lapata is married to Paula Lapata and the father of four young children, including two boys who are students at Furry Elementary, and two daughters.

Mr. Lapata was one of five candidates who applied to fill an open seat on the Board.

The other candidates were:

  • Dan DeNardy, of Groton Township
  • Tammy Didion, of Perkins Township and currently a secretary at Furry Elementary
  • Paul Koch, an attorney from Perkins Township, and
  • Chad Markovich, of Perkins Township

The Board met on Monday to interview each of the candidates during a closed meeting. The members selected Mr. Lapata to fill the unexpired term of former Board President Nicole Hykes, who resigned her seat in April. Mr. Lapata’s term continues through Dec. 31, 2021.

The Perkins Board of Education members also appointed Jason Dulaney, who had been vice president of the Board, as Board president, and Board member Scott Hart as vice president of the Board.
