Perkins Local School District has turned to a long-time Perkins High School teacher as its new Director of Special Education. Chris Guss, who has been an intervention specialist for 28 years at Perkins High School, was formally hired by the Perkins Local School District Board of Education on Wednesday.

Mrs. Guss takes the position formerly held by Lindsey Holeman, who left the district to become an elementary school principal in Avon Lake. The Board of Education approved a two-year contract for Mrs. Guss.

Superintendent Todd Boggs touted Mrs. Guss’ experience and her “technical knowledge of the job.” He told the school board members that she will pursue her administrative specialist license, a requirement of the job, while in the post.

“I have full confidence in Mrs. Guss,” Mr. Boggs said.

Mrs. Guss will oversee the school district’s intervention special and paraprofessionals who work with some 300 students across the district’s four buildings and at all grade levels.

Mrs. Guss has a bachelor’s degree from Bowling Green State and a masters degree in special education from Ashland University.

The Board of Education also approved a one-year contract for Alexa Almond to fill Mrs. Guss’ former position as intervention specialist at the high school.

Ms. Almond has three years experience, most recently at Perrysburg Junior High School. She is a 2016 graduate of Bowling Green State University and a 2012 graduate of Eastwood High School in Pemberville.

The Board of Education also:

• Approved a one-year contract for Tim Harbal as an assistant administrator. Mr. Harbal, the father of Perkins High principal Jeff Harbal, is a former school principal and serves as a part-time administrator for the district.

• Approved a one-year contract for Anna Hintz, a physical education teacher at Meadowlawn Intermediate School.

• Amended its contract with North Point Educational Services Center to enable the pyschologist services of Sherry Burke. Mrs. Burke will work with students at Furry Elementary and Meadowlawn Intermediate School.
